Now off to Truefitt's, and be quick
Unless you want to feel my stick.
Five silver vials I must have
One for each kiss my darling gave.
Our bed was witness to my vow,
And I must pay the price, I trow.
In these melancholy cogitations the Major, had donned his own dressinggown and replaced his head of hair - a little grey had been introduced into the coiffure of late by Mr. Truefitt…
Old folks have a right to be interesting: and that a lady may continue to have a heart, although she is somewhat stouter than she was when a schoolgirl, and a man his feelings, although he gets his hair from Truefitt's
…sweet odour pervades his sleeping apartment—not that peculiar and delicious fragrance with which the Saints of the Roman Church are said to gratify the neighbourhood where they repose—but oils, redolent of the richest perfumes of Macassar, essences (from Truefitt's or Delcroix's) into which a thousand flowers have expressed their sweetest breath, await his meek head on rising; and infuse the pockethandkerchief with which he dries and draws so many tears.
But this George, what was he? I look through all his life, and recognise but a bow and a grin. I try to take him to pieces, and find silk stockings, padding, stays, a coat with frogs and a fur collar, a star and blue ribbon, a pocket-handkerchief prodigiously scented, one of Truefitt's best nutty brown wigs…
At Mr. Truefitt's, the excellent hairdresser's, they are learning French to beguile the time
While you were born as bald, you were, As any head that Truefitt dresses!
The general impression has been that it is some new arrangement of electric light such as is manufactured for the hair-pins and other ornaments recently seen at Truefitt's in Bond Street.
"But which way are we going? I must go to Truefitt's to have my hair cut."
"You haven't forgotten the old place, I see. Do you still keep up your subscription?"
"I suppose mine has run out, I have been abroad so long. Nothing like a good shampoo; for a guinea a year you can have it done as often as you like."
"I haven't subscribed lately. There used to be such a pretty girl at the counter. Do you remember?"
"You dog, always thinking of them,"
and laughing loudly they passed through the shop, and it was Frank that stared most at the young lady. They read "Punch" aloud to each other; they cracked jokes with the hairdressers; they snorted and laughed through the soap and jets of hot and cold water. Frank allowed scent and ivories to be pressed upon him by the young lady at the counter; Willy declined to be led into such extravagances. As he stepped out into the shine of the street, and took step from his friend, he said:
"By George! it makes me feel young again. It is just like old times."
I don't quite like the way they've got their hair done up in bunches; too fashionable, isn't it? - too much of the present day? I don't care to see a girl [….], with her coiffure so evidently turned out by Truefitt's!
Mr. Gladstone's appearance and manners are much in his favor. [….] There is not a dandy in the House but envies what Truefitt would call his "fine head of jet-black hair."
I do not mean to say that you do not often see that stately garment on persons of authority [….]. Certainly, when it comes to the artist at Truefitt's wearing a frock - coat while cutting your hair, you cannot help asking yourself whether its hour has not struck.
…..white leaded faces and high wigs loaded down with Venetian talc. Charles Fox was the exception. He wore one of Truefitt's nutty-brown wigs reeking with perfumed oil.
I wore my white satin with a pink sash, and a special person came in from Truefitt's to do my hair. He was a restless little man, and talked to himself in French all the time. When he had finished he stepped back, and threw up his hands and said, 'Ah, mademoiselle, c'est magnifique!' I said, "Yes, isn't it?" It was, too.
"The question of the scent in the Buick was made much of, when it was probably no mystery at all. Joss reeked of the Truefitt & Hill scent CAR, as all his close friends knew."
"In London Joss had always used Truefitt & Hill in Bond Street, including their range of lotions known as CAR, and eventually he would persuade Schouten to stock this exclusive range. Joss's dance partners were always aware of this pleasant scent. Men noticed it too – the distinctive aroma would pervade a changing room shared with Joss before a game of cricket or polo."
Elphinstone is a prinked, polished dandy, whose old age shall be made to shine with huile antique and one of Truefitt's best nutty-brown wigs.
In hairdressing, Mr Truefitt has followed the example of Mr Douglas and now employs women in his establishments both in London and Brighton.
He introduced me to his tailor in Dover Street, his bootmaker in Cork Street, and to his barber at Truefitt & Hill. He made me a temporary member of the Savile.
... amount of money,' than he has to force her to wear buttoned boots instead of laced ones, or to use Truefitt's Colombian dye rather than Douglas's Mexican balm
